I’ve had numerous people ask me over the years “why is Set Up Shop so cheap?!”

And, you know – I get it.

There are other people out there teaching makers how to run successful businesses. I’ve been doing this since 2013 – I’ve seen many, many other people pop up online over the years, adding their experience and expertise to this space. Heck, I even run a podcast with a few of them (waves to Mik & Deb).

Many of those other teachers charge MUCH more than I do for their knowledge. When you learn how to sell knowledge online, the message is ‘charge more!’. And you know… I could. But I don’t. And there’s a reason for that.

Back in the 2000s, before I figured out how to turn my passion into a profitable business, I was a qualified school teacher. I’ve always loved teaching. And everything I teach in Set Up Shop is something I’ve learnt the hard way – through trial-and-error in my own handmade business.

I’ve done the hard yards so you don’t have to.

I’ve taken over 1,000 amazing creative entrepreneurs through the Set Up Shop journey already, and the success stories that have come out of it have blown me away.

There is nothing more satisfying for a teacher than to see her student have an ‘a-ha’ moment that revolutionises their business and their life – and that’s something I see every day during Set Up Shop.

This is why I deliberately choose to keep Set Up Shop is SO affordable. I have never charged more than $85 AUD (about $60 USD as I write this) for the basic level of the course (I used to have upgrades, but I don’t offer those any more).

My mission is to help as many people as I possibly can realise their dream of building a thriving handmade business.

I would rather help 1000 people who paid a modest amount than 100 that paid hundreds (or thousands!) of dollars each.

I have deliberately chosen to charge less, so I can give this knowledge to more people.

I am one of you, so I understand you probably don’t have stacks of spare cash to spend on a course like this, even if you desperately want to do it.

I do not want cost to be a barrier to you participating in this program, because I truly believe it has the potential to change your life and help you realise your dream.

This is why Set Up Shop has always been – and will always remain – an affordable course.

As one of my students put it – my keeping the course price low is my own little act of craftivism (thanks Q!).

Just like I teach my students – you need to value your time and expertise, and charge accordingly. BUT, you also need to be crystal clear on who your target customer is.

For me, for this course, that’s the maker who really, really wants to have a serious crack at this handmade business gig – but who doesn’t have a lot of spare money to spend on it.

She has to be super-careful and smart with how she chooses invest in her business education. She doesn’t want to waste big money on a ‘maybe’. She wants to speed up her business growth without breaking the bank.

If that’s you – I hope you’ll join me for the next class of Set Up Shop, and do just that.

Jess 🙂
