Monday Viewing – Amy Cuddy: Your body language shapes who you are

This is one of my favourite TED talks of all time. If you think it’s just about body language – think again. It’s about facing your fear – showing up – ‘faking it till you make it’ AND about how some seemingly small tweaks in your body language can actually change the chemistry of your body – and therefore how confident you feel.

Watch it – you won’t regret it.

This was the best 20 minutes that I have spent in a long time. The TED talk was amazing. Until now, I hadn’t really noticed the changes that had happened to me during the past 7 years of my taking karate classes. I went from a quiet, shy person in class who would hardly make a sound to a person who has not only found her voice, but has become one of the karate teachers. Most people think that karate is only about self defense but it actually is more about making you confident in your own skin, which often alleviates the need to fight. The bad guy doesn’t usually choose to attack the person who looks confident and aware of their surroundings, they would rather choose the person who looks like life has already beaten them down.

Yes! I did Tae Kwon Do for a few years when I was a teenager, and the confidence I learnt through that has stayed with me.

Great talk! What an inspirational woman. I wonder too, if this is why people feel calmer after yoga? All those power poses bringing down the cortisol?

I think that is EXACTLY it, Louisa! I know it works for me šŸ™‚

What say you?
